Scare Tactics

I don’t watch a whole lot of TV anymore. I only watch a handful of shows. It looks like TV is getting stupider by the season. I am sick and tired of shows like “The Bachelor” or the infamous “Are you hot?” (thankfully I think this last one was pulled off the air after a couple of episodes.)

One of the shows that caught my attention while it was being promoted was The Sci-Fi Channel’s Scare Tactics .

When it comes down to it, this is your standard hidden-camera show but with a twist. The point of this show is not to confuse the victim and put them in a surreal situation. The twist is that they scare them. They come up with some freaky situation and put the victim in the middle of it. The previews talked about an alien abduction or a psychopathic hitchhiker.

For example, a bunch of guys pick up this hitchhiker who is acting kind of weird. He forces them to pull over and grabs the keys so that they don’t leave without him. While he is taking care of business, the hooks of the scare decide to look in the hitchhiker’s bag, only to see a severed head inside. The victim of course freaks out and that is where the fun begins.

It sounds great on paper, unfortunately the execution is less than perfect. The show is still for a few good laughs but they do not take some of the scares far enough. This show has so much potential. For example, there was an episode where the victim is asked to assist a famous person (Shannen Doherty, the host of the show) and she ends up getting kidnaped. The victim had no idea how to react and unfortunately they ended the scare too early. Wouldn’t it be fun to get her involved in the story? With secret messages, phone calls, deception and threatened. Of course we don’t want the victim to suffer too much, but you know, milk the situation for what it’s worth.

Unless the scares get a little more involved, I think that they are going to run out of juice very quickly. There are only so many times a can jump out of the darkness to scare the victim.
