I got lucky last night. I was driving over to Dennis’s house (Dennis is my boss) to help him set up the computer that he got for his daughter’s birthday.
I normally get there by driving through some back-roads as opposed to going through the Interstate. The drive is just as long, and it’s more entertaining.
Well, I was driving there and it was dark. Yes, it was a dark stormy night. OK, it was not stormy. It was a dark night. Like nights tend to be.
A car was driving in the other direction and suddenly, thanks to the light from the other car, I was able to see something moving on the left side. It was four little sticks moving fast.
“Uh, sticks”, I thought. And then my brain said “Shit! A deer” and my leg moved to the break.
Notice that I didn’t say “I thought: that’s a deer” and I didn’t say that I stepped on the break. It was all rather automatic.
My car came to a complete stop relatively quickly. My seat-belt held me in place and that’s when I saw a deer crossing the road, look at me and keep going.
If it weren’t because of that other car who happened to be driving in the other direction on that road at that time, I may not be writing this now. Or maybe my car would now be in the shop, or totaled, and I wouldn’t know how to get to the airport on Tuesday. But more about that on Monday.
