Monopoly. Can you say mo-no-po-ly?

Today I’ve decided to deal with my cellphone company. And let me tell you, it’s a treat. Here’s my situation:

I want to upgrade to one of their national plans, so far so good. And I have two options. The one that would make the most sense would be to sign up with a 1 or 2 year contract and pay $99-$149 for the phone depending on the length of the contract. My problem is that there is a very good chance that I will be moving to the San Diego area before my contract is over. No problem, I get a San Diego number when I move, right? Wrong. They will not give me a number over there if and when I move, I’m stuck with a Kansas number until my contract expires. So then people trying to reach me would have to make long distance calls. Lovely.

My other solution, to not agree to a yearly contract but pay $300 for the phone.

It is as if they do not want to do business.

Why don’t I sign up with Verizon, or Cingular or similar? Because out here in this area of freaking Kansas, those nice(r) services are not available. Alltel practically has a monopoly in this area.

This is so frustrating.
