Since it may be a while before the physical green card arrives, and I may need to travel for business before that time, I went to Wichita yesterday to get a temporary green card on my passport.
The immigration office had several people waiting there by the time I arrived, it consisted mostly of Mexican parents and their children. Several children were translating for their parents.
It took them about 30 minutes to get to me. They took my passport and 2 minutes later they came back with this stamp on it:
I think I could have made that myself at home by carving a potato. Maybe they should give the people working there some glitter and markers to make the stamp look more exciting. They could draw smiley faces and rainbows.
But at least that stamp is as good as a green card. It allows me to work and live anywhere in the United States and to come in and out without a problem. It has a 1 year expiry date because they assume that you’ll have the actual card by then, otherwise they’ll stamp it again.
